On Nov. 23, 2008, I’ll test my physical and mental limits in a punishing 140.6 mile course across the desert in the Ironman Arizona competition in Tempe, Arizona to support this group. Whenever I run, bike and swim in these races, I do it to raise funds for important causes.
When I’m not training, I work as the chief operating officer for Chicago-based Padma’s Plantation, a purveyor of tropical-inspired furniture known for its use of natural materials.
This year I will be sweating to help a brother in need (yes, a Phi Kappa Tau fraternity brother from my days at Ohio State): Barry Winovich.
Barry was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in March 2006. Barry was a natural athlete in college, playing rugby and just about every other contact sport…yet he can no longer run, ride a bike or swim. ALS is taking its horrible toll.
But Barry has not given up. Rather, he has established The Bright Side of the Road Foundation, which is dedicated to funding the search for a cure for ALS.
Since Barry’s initial diagnosis, this group has pledged over $500,000 towards ALS research at the Cleveland Clinic.
I’m asking my network of friends and family to help me help Barry in his mission to find a cure. Sign up now to support my efforts in the Ironman competition and make a donation. Every dollar helps.
BRIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD FOUNDATION is a 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 2006 by the friends and family of Barry to help find a cure for this devastating illness.
